We at the Forefront of Human Milk Discoveries
Human milk is the best source of nourishment for infants around the globe, yet it has been vastly under-studied. The Mommy’s Milk Human Milk Research Biorepository was created to serve as a resource that could be used by scientists to directly address the shortage of human milk-focused research. We wanted to be able to offer researchers easy access to data they can use to answer important questions about the health characteristics and benefits of human milk.
How are we helping move research on human milk forward? We’re doing it through two main efforts:
- We established and are constantly growing a research database consisting of indexed human milk samples and paired maternal-child clinical data that can be accessed by the scientific community to conduct independent, IRB-approved research projects.
- We’re adding to the scientific literature on the relationship between human milk and infant and child health and development by internally conducting our own research using the samples and data we’ve collected.
About Mommy’s Milk
Mommy’s Milk was established in 2014 by Christina Chambers, PhD, MPH, a perinatal epidemiologist and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California (UC) San Diego School of Medicine. It is a multidisciplinary research initiative of the UC San Diego Center for Better Beginnings and our many partners. Mommy’s Milk activities are conducted under the oversight of a epidemiology, pediatrics, neonatology, nutrition, and microbiology.
